Victorian Floor Tiles – How to Keep Them Clean

Victorian Floor Tiles
Victorian floor tiles look wonderful but to keep them intact and clean they will need a lot of care and attention.  Most period tiling designs have a combination of plain tiles and encaustic tiles that have different coloured clays inlaid to create the designs and these tend to become ingrained with dirt.  Victorian floor tiles can also become dull due to hundreds of years of wear and tear.

If you decide to clean your Victorian floor tiles yourself then beware of the ridiculous advice that is posted on the internet as using these methods will more than likely damage your tiles.  Do NOT use any of the suggestions listed below:

·         Wire wool - scratches the surface of tile very easily, dirt then clings to the scratches
·         Sandpaper - basically abrades the clay tile away, tile is now more fragile
·         Brick acid - just think about it, Sulphamic acid poured on to your floor?
·         Caustic soda - May cause bleaching and discolouration
·         High alkaline cleaner dwelled for 10 - 15 minutes - Bleaches tiles permanently
·         Paint stripper - Application movements will be etched into the tiles permanently
·         Boiled linseed oil - Oil dies, stains and then discolours your floor, very hard to remove

The best way to clean and maintain your Victorian floor tiles is to use an alkaline cleaner. Always start in an unobtrusive corner so you can test the cleaning product.  You should pre-wet the tiles and apply the cleaning product onto the surface of the tiles.  Agitate the product manually by using a green pan scourer as these are made from a plastic material which is abrasive enough to work the product into the body of the tile but will not scratch the surface.  Leave the product on for 20 minutes and then thoroughly rinse off.  You should never allow the product to dry on the surface of the tiles and you should give each tile individual attention.  If there are hardened substances on the tiles, such as paint splashes, you can use a blade at a 45 degree angle.

After the cleaning process is completed it is often a good idea to re-grout the tiles.  New and clean grout will give Victorian floor tiles a visual lift and will also protect the edges of tiles that are in areas of heavy footfall.  It is better to use weak cement grout rather than lime mortar grout as lime is more than likely to stain the tiles.  You should also reseal the tiles so that they don’t absorb further spills or dirt. You should never use bees wax or linseed oil as a protective coating.

Stylish Tiles Reigate for Bathrooms

So you live in Reigate and you have decided that you want to give your bathroom an entirely new look.  The bathroom is generally the most popular room in the home to find tiles.  This due to the fact that tiles have better hygienic and waterproof qualities compared to carpets, wallpaper and most paints.  In addition to this tiles also have the potential to add potential value to your bathroom and you also have access to some unique finishes that you wouldn’t be able to achieve with other materials.

Bathrooms are a room in the house that need to be hygienic and this can be achieved by using tiles.  Tiles have a fresh appearance and have easy wipe surfaces.  If you are tiling in the shower area you will need to choose glazed ceramic or porcelain tiles as their moisture absorption rate is 0.5% which means they are pretty much waterproof.  This will not be the case with materials like wallpaper and paint.  If you decide on natural tiles for your bathroom you will need to ensure that they are sealed with the proper maintenance products before they are applied in your bathroom as this will prevent water damage and staining.

When you visit a shop for tiles Reigate they will advise you not to use large bathroom tiles in a small bathroom as this will significantly dwarf your bathroom.  A shop for tiles Reigate should also advise that using small tiles in a bathroom may look good but using small tiles means a lot of grout lines which can be unappealing.  It is for this reason that medium tiled are more commonly used in a bathroom.

Your Tiles Reigate shop will be able to give you advice on the best tiles for your bathroom , for example, light coloured bathroom tiles can make small bathrooms look bigger as they reflect light better than a darker coloured tile.  Using the same colour tiles on the floor as well as the walls can also give your bathroom a more spacious feel, you can also use grout that is the same colour as the tiles.  If you have compact spacing between your toilet, washbasin and windows then smaller tiles are a good idea as the flow will be better and they will require less cuts than larger tiles.

When you have decided on the tile that you would like in your bathroom you will then need to speak to the staff at your Tiles Reigate shop as they will be able to give you an estimate on the amount of tiles you will need.  They will also be able to advise you on colours, sizes and materials so you can complete your dream bathroom.

Most Popular Bathroom Wall Tiles

When it comes to designing your new home or even remodelling your existing one the bathroom is a significant room in the process.  From choosing the fixtures you want that will match your cabinets and the style of bathtub to fit your theme, it can be a daunting task planning your bathroom decoration.  Simply by doing some research you will be sure to choose bathroom wall tiles that suits all your styling needs but also your budget as well.

The most popular choice of bathroom wall tiles is ceramic tiles.  Ceramic tiles are water resistant which is imperative for a bathroom surface.  Ceramic can be glazed and fired in many different colours and designs and this includes hand painted mosaics.  The biggest flaw in ceramic tiles is that they have a tendency to chip quite easily in comparison to other materials.  It is a good idea to order a few extra tiles if using ceramic tiles in case you need to make future repairs.

Another popular choice of bathroom wall tiles is the stone tile. Stone all tiles are also the most expensive.  Stone tiles are naturally water resistant and they come in different forms, like granite and marble.  Because stone tiles have such a tough exterior they are an excellent deterrent to mould and other fungus types.  This makes stone bathroom wall tiles the optimum choice for those who do not have to worry too much about their budget.  Stone bathroom wall tiles can be slightly more difficult to hang as they are so much heavier, but if you employ an experienced contractor this will not be a problem.

If you are looking for a green and earth friendly bathroom wall tile then your best option is to go for a glass wall tile.  The colours, shapes and sizes of glass tiles have no limits because of its recycled nature.  Glass wall tiles are enjoyable to design and fun to work with as you can mix and match the textures to give your bathroom a personal touch.  The cost of glass bathroom wall tiles can vary but they are generally moderately priced.

If you want to create a look that incorporates a combination of textiles then you should use mosaic tiling.  Mosaic tiling is a very inventive way to use different types of tiles.  You can combine glass, stone and ceramic tiles to name but a few and by combining these different tiles you can change the walls of your bathroom to a beautiful and eye-catching array of colours and textures.  Using the mosaic technique you can make your bathroom a unique and personal space for you and your family to enjoy for many years to come.

You can also now choose a grout colour that matches your tile choice.  For example if you are using white tiles then you could use a yellow, red or blue grout for contrast.  Make sure you apply sealer to your grout lines in areas of heavy wear as sealers will help to preserve and protect the grout.
